- wading through the results one by one
- phone a friend and get a recommendation.
- use a price comparison site:
Handling things yourself is best in many ways, if you have hours to spare going through company by copmpany, looking at graphic designers portfolios getting in touch to find out that the designer is at capacity.
Phoning a friend is good, however what designer is good for one is not necessarly good for another. Also, if the designer is used to doing brochure design projects and you are looking for a packaging designer - then there could be problems.
Using a comparison site to find a local graphic designer is a great option, for three reasons:

- The designers will have capacity and will chase you
- You can pick and choose:
