Christ, The Church And Pat Robertson

((•)) Hear This Text

This Week in Christian television broadcaster Pat Robertson, an announcer said that a man would be morally justified to divorce his wife with Alzheimer's disease in order to marry another woman. The wife of dementia was screened, Robertson said, "no" more. It is more than shame. It's more than cruelty. It is a rejection of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Few Christians to take more seriously everything that Robertson. Most of the eyes and shake their heads when he made another strange comment (for example, the defense of China's brutal policy of abortion of a child to identify the trial of God for specific actions in the September 11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake in Haiti). This is serious, however, because it points to a problem that is much greater than Robertson.

Marriage, the Bible tells us, is an icon into something deeper, more ancient, more mysterious. Marriage is a sign of the Union, the apostle Paul declares that the mystery of Christ and his church (Ephesians 5). The husband, then, is to love their wives "as Christ loved the church" (Ephesians 5:25). This love is not defined as a wave of romanticism hormone, but the same self-sacrifice to be crucified. My husband's image of Christ as he loves his wife, giving himself up.

To the arrest of Christ, His bride, the church has forgotten who he was, and denied that he was. He can not leave. He did not leave.

The bride of Christ, fled from his hand and returned to their old habits. When Jesus came to them after the resurrection, the church had some very well what they were doing when Jesus found them first: out of the boats are a network administrator. Jesus did not leave. He stood with his words, he was with his wife, also the place of the Skull and then.

A woman or a man with Alzheimer's disease can not do anything for you. No romance, no sex, no association or even the camaraderie. It's just the point. Because marriage is an icon of Christ / the church, a man to love his wife as his own flesh. You can not cut it, simply because it is "useful" addition.

Pat Robertson is cruel declaration of marriage is not abnormal. He and his associates have given us this year, an increase of the Gospel with more in common with the Asherah pole that cross. They gave us a politicized Christianity, using the churches to "mobilize" voters rather than remain outside the power structures as a prophetic witness to the Gospel.

But Jesus did not die of the Christian Coalition, has died in the church. And the church through the centuries, is not significant because of its size or influence. It 'a blood weak, defenseless, and shot. He is faithful to us anyway.

If churches are to survive, we must fight this mammonocracy Canaanite who so often speaks to us. But in addition we must educate a new generation to see the gospel of recessed loyalty, fidelity, which is a cruciform church.

It 'easy to teach couples to put the "spark" back into their marriage, put the "sizzle" again in their sexual lives. You still love you and want everything. But that's not what love is. Love is the fidelity with a cross on his back. Love is drowning in his own blood. Love cries, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me."

Unfortunately, many of our neighbors think when they hear the parade of cartoon characters, allow us to talk they hear the gospel. They assume that when they see the evangelist laugh on the TV screen to see Jesus. They assume that when they look at the stadium, political rallies to "take back America for Christ" they see Jesus. But Jesus is not there.

Jesus tells us that is present in the weak, vulnerable, useless. There, in one of them (Matthew 25:31-46). Somewhere out there right now, a man is to wipe the drool of a 85-year-old woman who jumps because she thinks he is a stranger. No television cameras are around. None of the politicians seeking a meeting with them.
